Early Life and EducationStephen Gardinerwas born into a family of cloth merchants in 1483.
In 1507, he traveled to Paris to pursue his education, where he met Erasmus of Rotterdam. He later studied at Cambridge University, earning doctorates in civil law (1520) and canon law (1521).
Service Under Cardinal Wolsey
In 1524, Gardiner entered the service of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Lord Chancellor to King Henry VIII.
He played a crucial role in the efforts to persuade Pope Clement VII to annul Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, securing his appointment as Bishop of Winchester in 1531.
