Alan Greenspan, the long-serving chairman of the Federal Reserve System (FRS) of the United States, announced his retirement on January 31, 2006, after holding the position since 1987.
Known as the "best chairman of the FRS of the 20th century," Greenspan voluntarily left his post at the age of 79 and prepared to enter retirement.
