          Sharon Epatha Merkerson was born on November 28, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, as the youngest of five children.

          Her mother, Anne, was the only female employee in the Detroit Post Office's motor vehicle department. Epatha's father worked in a factory. The family split when she was five years old.
