          Early Life and Education

          Pyotr Mironovich Masherov was born on February 26, 1918, in the village of Shiroki, Vitebsk Region, Belarus, to a poor peasant family.

          According to family legend, his great-great-grandfather was a French soldier named Macheraut who remained in the Senno District after Napoleon's army's retreat in 1812 and converted to Orthodoxy.

          Masherov had five siblings, of whom only three survived.

          He attended primary school and later a secondary school, often traveling 18 kilometers on homemade skis during the winter. In 1934, he completed his secondary education and enrolled in the physics and mathematics department of the Vitebsk Pedagogical Institute.

          Military Career

          During World War II, Masherov joined the Red Army as a volunteer
