An alumnus of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, Basak completed his BFA and MFA in 1997 and 1999 respectively.
He was interested in depicting the contradictions of contemporary times, the struggle to survive, and life in the rural hinterlands. He employed pop art in his works and was also influenced by films, billboards and advertisements.
